Arizona Breastnet Now Offering Screening Ultrasound
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Scottsdale, Ariz. - July 1, 2009 - Arizona Breastnet of Scottsdale, a full service breast diagnostic center
who specializes in breast imaging, announces the use of of a new screening device
designed to detect breast cancers that mammograms may miss.
Now at Arizona Breastnet, screening ultrasounds are being offered to their patients using the state-of-the art
SonoCiné Whole Breast Ultrasound Machine. SonoCiné is a computerized ultrasound exam created to detect small
tumors hidden in dense breast tissue. Such cancers may also be missed by physical exam. According to Dr. Belinda Barclay-White,
"We are very excited to be the only breast center in the Valley to offer this screening tool to our patients."
In other breast centers, breast ultrasound is only used as a diagnostic tool, when a mammogram shows a mass or if a
lump can be felt but is not seen on the mammogram.
"In women with dense breasts, mammograms are more difficult to interpret because it can be difficult to 'see through' the dense tissue.
That is why we are very excited to be offering screening ultrasound. The SonoCiné Method provides an additional examination, which
finds small cancers that mammography may miss. It is not a replacement for screening mammography, but an additional exam for women
with 'dense' breasts, and some women with breast implants." explains Barclay-White.
Density of the breast is an individual characteristic, as young women tend to have dense breasts and older women tend to
have more of a fatty, or low-density breast. Studies in dense-breasted women show that ultrasound can find cancers that may
be invisible on a mammogram. The SonoCiné method requires no breast compression, no injections, takes about 30 minutes to
perform and is permanently recorded for the radiologists review.
"Since we know that finding cancers when they are small saves lives, adding a screening ultrasound to a woman's yearly
breast health program provides extra peace of mind," states Barclay-White. "The cost is $300 and the results of your exam
are reviewed with you at the time of your appointment at Breastnet."
Even though the exam is not covered by insurance at this time, many women are adding this exam to their yearly mammogram
appointment, especially women at high risk for breast cancer, those with dense breasts, or those that have breast implants.
