A recent study concluded that postmenopausal women
whose diet included a high intake of calcium in low
fat dairy products (greater than 1250mg daily) had
a 20% lower risk of developing breast cancer.
Interestingly calcium and vitamin D supplements
showed no influence on breast cancer risk.
In order to calculate the number of milligrams
presently in your diet, multiply the "percent
daily requirement" listed on the back of the
container by 10. So if the percentage of daily
requirement is 20%, this product contains
200 milligrams of calcium per serving.
Those of you who cannot tolerate calcium supplements
for your bone health can also benefit from this
information as we should ingest 1200 to 1500mg
of calcium and 800 IU of vitamin D3 daily.
Some excellent products that contain calcium are
milk, yogurt, cheese, tofu, orange juices labeled
high in calcium, sardines in a can with bones
and soymilk.
